As a mom or parent, I think it’s vital to learn how to stay emotionally healthy, so you can be there for your kids.  It also makes a huge difference in how you deal with your spouse, or even simply how you manage at work each day.  The tips below are a great beginning toward better emotional health and a better life for you and your family.

9 Tips For Better Emotional Health

  1. Take time for yourself: Being surrounded by kids 24/7 can really drain you emotionally. Always take time for yourself for your sanity and emotional health.  This is good for no just you, but everyone around you.
  2. Eat as healthy as possible: Your body needs nutrients to stay healthy. You can’t eat bon bons all day and expect to be able to deal with anything that comes your way.  A diet rich in vegetables, fiber, and fruit is optimal.  Don't forget to drink water along with the healthy diet.
  3. Take time to meditate: It’s nearly impossible to meditate with screaming kids, but it does help you stay emotionally healthy. Clearing your mind and focusing on what matters.  Emotional health begins within, so taking this quiet time makes a huge difference.  A longer shower or getting up earlier can be the best ways to make this happen.
  4. Be positive: Want to stay emotionally healthy? Try and stay positive. Don’t let your mind tell you negative things, focus on the positive only!  Always look for a positive solution to issues in your life.
  5. Talk to a friend: Sometimes our friends are the only ones who understand our craziness when we talk. Sometimes calling up a friend is the best thing you can do for your emotional health.
  6. Start a blog or journal your feelings: I have found that blogging is a great way for me to stay emotionally healthy. It helps keep me focused on something I love doing and keeps my mind away from the negative.  I also like grabbing a traditional journal and pen to write down my feelings on paper.
  7. Have a plan in mind: Whenever something bad happens, try to avoid reaching to food for comfort. Have a different plan in mind, instead. If you want to stay emotionally healthy, try coloring in an adult coloring book, or going for a run.  These are both emotionally positive things.
  8. Take on a hobby: Our brains need something we love to focus on when things go awry. For example, I love to cook and focus my energy on that when something eats at my nerves.
  9. Help someone in need: When we are sensitive it is usually because something has happened to us.  Helping someone else can always help. Our human nature is designed to be compassionate. If something negative happens, we can stay emotionally healthy by helping someone else.

Your emotional health is vital to the stability of your family life, work life, and all of your relationships.  These tips are a great beginning, but never hesitate to seek professional counseling or medical help when it becomes too much to handle.  Anxiety and depression are real emotional health issues that shouldn't be taken lightly.
